April: Celebrating Women's Eye Health and Safety

Fun Fact: Did you know that two out of every three people living with blindness or vision problems are women? Well, it’s true, according to the National Eye Institute.

Welcome to April, a month where we celebrate Women's Eye Health and Safety! As spring blossoms around us, it's the perfect time to shed some light on the importance of caring for our eyes. After all, they're not just the windows to our souls; they're our guides through the colorful tapestry of life

So, why focus specifically on women's eye health and safety? Well, did you know that women are more prone to certain eye conditions compared to men? From dry eyes to age-related macular degeneration, women face unique challenges when it comes to maintaining optimal eye health. That's why this month is all about empowering women to take charge of their eye care journey!


Let's dive into some informative tips to keep your vision in tip top shape!


1. Blink, Blink, Blink!

Ever find yourself staring at a screen for hours on end? Guilty as charged, especially as someone who is attached to my laptop for work and life! But did you know that prolonged screen time can lead to digital eye strain? The American Optometric Association describes this as Computer Vision Syndrome. Societal norms call for us to manage and navigate our heath in different ways than ever before. Combat this by practicing the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. And don't forget to blink! Blinking helps keep your eyes moist and prevents that dreaded dry eye feeling.

2. Shield Those Eyes!

Sunglasses aren't just a fashion statement; they're your eyes' best friends! When you step out into the sunshine [which can be great in providing you with Vitamin D], make sure to rock a pair of shades that offer 100% UV protection. Not only do they shield your eyes from harmful UV rays, but they also reduce the risk of cataracts and other eye conditions. Plus, there is nothing like a cute pair of shades to match a great outfit!

3. Eat Your Way to Healthy Vision

Who knew that munching on carrots could actually be good for your eyesight? It's true! Carrots are rich in Vitamin A, which is helpful for vision health, skin health and immune function, according to Debbie Petitpain, registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. A diet rich in fruits and veggies, especially those packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and beta-carotene, can help maintain good eye health. So, load up on colorful produce like spinach, kale, and oranges to give your peepers the nutrients they crave.

4. Get Regular Eye Exams

Don't wait until you're squinting at street signs to schedule an eye exam! Regular check-ups with your eye doctor are crucial for maintaining optimal vision and catching any potential issues early on. Eye exams for adults aged 18-64 are recommended at least once a year. Plus, it's the perfect excuse to try on some fire frames! [Whether in person or online].

5. Rest Up

Ah, the sweet bliss of a good night's sleep! Not only does it rejuvenate your mind and body, but it also does wonders for your eyes. Aim for 7-9 hours of shut-eye each night to give your eyes the rest they deserve. They’ll thank you in the morning!
